Shepherd Jackson & Jennie Lane
This page was last updated: October 13, 2013
Shepherd Jackson and Jennie Lane were slaves in Texas. It is not known where they originally came from. They are believed to have been owned by the same slave holders in Texas. They were married on November 2, 1867 in Lamar County, Texas. They had 17 children and 10 survived. The marriage information shows Jennie's maiden name as Brown, but the death certificate of several of their children show her maiden name as Lane. The 1870 census records show Shepherd and Jennie living near Thomas Lane (white). In some instances, slaves stayed close to where they were owned for the first several years of freedom. We can only speculate that was the case with Shepherd and Jennie. According to the 1870 census their birth place was Louisiana. Other census records show different places of birth. By 1880, they moved to Fannin County near other family members, where they lived out their lives. They are presumed to be buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
